Botanical Garden of Crete
Βοτανικός Κήπος
A reading and hiking guide at the Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete: the story after the fire, plants up close and a quiet preparation for your visit.
A garden between the hills
The Botanical Park & Gardens of Crete is located in the hinterland of Chania, on the route via Fournes towards Omalos. The garden brings fruit trees from different parts of the world together with aromatic, medicinal and ornamental plants. It is a landscaped plant collection in a hilly landscape, no cross section of exclusively wild Cretan nature.
That difference is a nice entrance for your visit. Ask yourself whether you are looking at an indigenous species, an agricultural crop or an alien plant. A tree that grows here does not prove in itself that it would grow everywhere in Crete without care. A botanical garden also shows people's work: choosing, planting, maintaining and explaining.
[1]From fire to a new beginning
The history of origin begins with the devastating fire of 2003. The garden presents itself as an answer to that disaster: a damaged landscape was given a new destination. A burnt old olive tree stood as a reminder. Thus, the story of recovery is visible between the new greenery.
[2]According to our own frequently asked questions, the park opened in 2010 for visitors. Don't read this development as a spontaneous return to the original nature: a botanical garden is a conscious establishment. The combination of remembering and replanting makes the place interesting. The burned stem tells a different story than the leaf around it.
[3]Learn to look at leaf, fruit and smell
The collection gives reason to compare. Look at leaf shape and leaf surface: large or small, firm or soft, shiny or hairy. Then look at the place where the plant is. Is there much light? Is there shelter? Is the soil in the shade? Use the label to check your perception instead of guessing a species based on one characteristic.
Fruit trees make the relationship between plant and food concrete. A fruit may look unexpected outside the supermarket; a tree does not have to bloom or bear fruit during your visit. Ask employees about the season and special specimens. This way the visit remains interesting when exactly that one fruit is missing.
For aromatic plants, it is more than smell. Note the connection between the name on the plate and the herbs you encounter in the kitchen. Touching, picking or tasting are only done when expressly allowed. The word "medical" on a plant category is not an advice for use and does not automatically make a plant edible.

The hike: descend and go back up
The official visitor information describes a natural route of about 2.5 kilometers through the sloping terrain. The path has rising and descending parts, reaches the lake and returns to the ending and restaurant via a winding route. The average visit time mentioned is about two to two and a half hours.
Plan that time as walking time with space to look, not as a sporty goal. Start relaxing, take breaks and retain energy for the back part. A green environment is not automatically cool or shady everywhere. Comfortable shoes with grip are more important than the label .
For a wheelchair, rollator or pram a natural slope path can be difficult. The information available is not a support to consider the complete round as accessible independently. Ask the park in advance for the actual surface, the slopes and any shorter possibilities. With children, a small assignment works well: find three different leaf shapes and compare a plant from the garden with an ingredient on the menu.
[4]The same garden, another day
A botanical visit is about what is present at the time. Flowers, leaves, fruits and seeds do not all follow the same rhythm. Therefore, do not use a visit in spring as a measure for a visit in autumn, or vice versa. Ask what is worth right now.
A quiet way of looking: choose one place to see the whole, one plant to study up close and one question to ask an employee. In the summer, starting early is a logical choice to reduce the heat. After rain, grip and a adjusted pace are important. These are practical planning advice, no guarantee about the condition of the path on your visit day.
From garden to table
The restaurant connects the garden with the Cretan cuisine. According to its own description, herbs, fruits and products from the vegetable garden are used; it presents a local seasonal kitchen. Ask what comes out of the garden on the day in question, instead of assuming that every ingredient has been grown on the menu on the spot.
A lunch can give the visit a second layer: you first see how something grows and then recognizes an aroma or preparation. Check the current map and ask for diet wishes directly or allergens. The garden as an inspiration makes the restaurant special; what is available remains dependent on season and supply.

Practical: check before departure
Checked on 22 October 2026. The website mentions €8 for visitors over 12, €4 for 6 January 12 years and free entry under 6 years with an adult companion. It mentions opening from 09.00 hours and last access two hours before sunset. At the same time, there is an older closure notification with reopening in March 2026. The website therefore does not confirm the current opening. Call before departure, especially at the edges of the season: +30 28212 00770.
[1]The official route runs via Fournes towards Lakkoi. For bus connections, parking, the current opening and the state of the hiking trail you can consult the visitor page of the park. Bring water, sun protection and suitable shoes. Leave time for the return journey and don't let your day depend on uncontrolled last entry time.
A green day in Chania
Please make the garden the main visit of the day. For further floor closes the guide on the Lefka Ori to the surrounding mountain land; Aptera offers a different view of the use of land and water. Both are located in the Chania region, but do not form a continuous walking route. Combine them only if the available time, warmth and opening times allow.
