Φανάρι
A mountain portrait of Φανάρι in the Lefka Ori: location, connection with the surrounding mountain land and careful preparation. No extended hiking trail.
Which top are we talking about?
Here we discuss the Fanari in the eastern Lefka Ori, near Kastro, which is mentioned in the mountain program of the Heraklion hiking association as 2,170 meters. .ΚορυφήThe name Fanari also occurs elsewhere; therefore check the map point and the surrounding mountains, not just the spelling. This guide is not meant to identify any summit called local Fanari or Mikro Fanari.
The map link refers to the existing topographical point in our Crete map. A top coordinate is a landmark, not a beginning of a hiking trail and no route to the top. Use the name together with a current topographical map and local information.
[1][3]The landscape on a mountain scale
If you look from the inhabited plateau at the higher mountain land, you will see how quickly the scale changes. Nearby peaks and bowls may seem like one continuous wall from below. Once higher, the intermediate layers, spines and terrain breaks can determine the progress.
Therefore, experience the summit as part of the Lefka Ori. In a mountain landscape, lines of vision, wind, subsurface and orientation are more important than just the number at the highest point. One kilometer on the map says little without the rise, decline and nature of the terrain. The shortest straight line is rarely a responsible route choice.
Kastro and Fanari: neighbors, no obvious combination
The published association program connects Kastro and Fanari with other summits in a multi-day mountain tour. This shows their coherence within the mountain range, but the program is not proof that a separate combination is suitable for each hiker. The organisation, guidance, overnight stays and supplies are part of such a trip.
[1]In advance, decide whether you want to visit one top, take a tour or plan a pass. Each choice changes the way back and the time you need to book. Do not take over an existing program without looking at the exact departure, terrain conditions and experience of the original group.

Preparing for a mountain tour
Start with current local information at a competent mountain guide or mountain sports association EOS ChaniaDiscuss starting point, route, recent terrain conditions, water, reverse point and return transport. Do not assume an open cabin, drinkable water or a riding mountain road without confirmation.
Use an appropriate topographical map and make sure you can navigate without reach. A GPX file is a tool, not a quality mark for a route. See who created the track and under what conditions; a winter trail, a direct descent or a trip from a highly experienced group does not automatically fit your visit.
Choose a time when you can still turn back on disappointing progress. The weather on a mountain top can vary considerably from the coast. Wind, fog, cold or snow can change the difficulty. Winter climbs are part of mountaineering with suitable knowledge and equipment, not on a normal holiday walk.
What this guide does capture
The height has been taken over from the mountain sports source mentioned above; map databases may differ slightly. This chapter provides background and preparation, no extended hiking route. Therefore, no guaranteed duration, difficulty or passability is granted. Such data are part of a specific route and an actual assessment.
You don't have to reach the summit to get to know the mountain country. A visit to the inhabited plateau, with time for landscape and villages, can be a full alternative. Choose a goal that suits the group and conditions. For the whole area offers the Lefka Ori guide more coherence; for the gorge there is a separate chapter on Samaria National Park.
