From loose letters to a useful message
Reading Greek on the way doesn't have to start with translating every sentence. Often you look for only one fact: the destination of a bus, an ingredient, a quantity or the exit of a building. First read the surroundings of the text. A word on a departure sign gets a different function from the same word in a story.
Use a fixed order: recognize the type of text, find the most important word, divide it into recognizable pieces and then check the small words and numbers. Skip unknown decorations or brand names for the time being. Your goal is to find the message first; then you can examine the language more closely.
The source examples below are from the official websites mentioned above. They are copied as text, not presented as a picture of a sign or label. All other signposts, labels and prices are made specifically for this lesson and are shown as a practice example. They do not give an actual timetable, a retail price or a restaurant offer.

Letters that put your eyes on the wrong foot
A Greek word may seem familiar because some capital letters resemble Latin letters. That's exactly when you might be wrong. Read the Greek letter value and try not to use the Dutch alphabet automatically. In the table there are some common pitfalls; the sound descriptions are simple reminders, not a full pronunciation course.
| Greek | Read As | Pay attention |
|---|---|---|
| Ρ ρ | r | The capital looks like a Latin P. |
| Π π | p | This is exactly the letter for the p-sound. |
| Η η | ng | No h-sound; the same sound is also spelled differently. |
| Ν ν | n | The small ν looks like a Latin v. |
| Β β | v | Greek beta doesn't sound like our b in New Greek. |
| Χ χ | ch | Think of a Dutch ch, with variation by the next vowel. |
| Θ θ | th | Kind of like the English th in think. |
| Σ σ ς | s | ς is at the end of a word. |
| Υ υ | He's like a loose vowel. | In combinations such as ου the spelling works differently. |
In ordinary small letters, the accent usually indicates the stressed syllable. In all words written in capital letters, the accent often lacks. ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΟ and Ηράκλειο The dots in a trema have a different function: they help indicate that vowels are pronounced separately.

Recognize place names without saying anything
Learn a few names as recognition anchors. The first and last letters, the length and a striking combination of letters already help. Then read the whole word to avoid confusion. A difference in transliteration on a card does not automatically mean another place: Chania, Hania and the Greek name refer to the same city.
| Capital letters | Common spelling | Name in the guide |
|---|---|---|
A place name may appear in another form by grammar. Therefore, do not look for only one unchanging string of letters. προς means "to/to/to'. προς Ηράκλειο read the direction and then the destination. A prefix like Άνω (top) or Κάτω (below-) can be essential to keep two villages apart.

Source: Dissect a Greek bus overview
On the official website of KTEL Heraklion "Lasithi" are the words Πίνακες δρομολογίων. The first word means tables here; the second indicates of which: from the journeys or timetables. You don't have to control the whole grammar to understand that this is the entry to departure tables.
The same site uses place names and indications as ΛιμάνιThis is useful because a city name does not yet tell you which stop or which station you are leaving from. Therefore, always read departure point, destination, direction and validity period on a trip. The mini-show below is a homemade practice example, not driving advice for today.

Read signs: first the verb or keyword
Short signs often don't have a full sentence. One noun can be enough. Είσοδος and Έξοδος useful opposites: entrance and exit. The small difference at the beginning changes the meaning. Therefore, practice them as a few.
On a communication, denial is often more important than a long place name. Απαγορεύεται indicates that something is forbidden. Then read what is underneath; only the first word recognition is insufficient. The table provides language exercises, no replacement for official traffic symbols or on-site directions.
| Homemade Preview | Meaning | So you read it. |
|---|---|---|
| ΕΙΣΟΔΟΣ | Entry | Recognize the first three letters as anchor. |
| ΕΞΟΔΟΣ | Ending | Pay attention Ξ true in the other word ΙΣ staat. |
| ΚΛΕΙΣΤΟ | Closed | An indication of the condition, without a full verb. |
| ΑΝΟΙΧΤΑ | Open | Read also days and hours for opening hours. |
| ΑΠΑΓΟΡΕΥΕΤΑΙ Η ΕΙΣΟΔΟΣ | Prohibition of access | The second half tells us what's forbidden. |
| ΙΔΙΩΤΙΚΟΣ ΧΩΡΟΣ | Private property / private space | No invitation to go in. |
| ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ | Caution / Caution | Find the explanatory note or the symbol next to it. |
| ΦΑΡΜΑΚΕΙΟ | Pharmacy | I'm sorry. I'm sorry. I'm sorry. |

Source: Read a bottle of olive oil
The producer Terra Crete uses on his Greek product page Εξαιρετικό παρθένο ελαιόλαδο. The last word is the anchor: olive oil. The words in front describe the category "Extra virgin" . So first read what the product is and then the details.
On the same page it says Ποικιλία: variety. This gives a different type of information than the product itself. A place name, brand name, variety and product designation can be close on the front. By taking their functions apart, a label becomes less unclear.
The back requires a different reading strategy. Find fixed sections and start with the information you need. The table is a word help for general labels, not the display of one complete product label.
| Heading | Meaning | Read Question |
|---|---|---|
| Συστατικά | Ingredients | What are the ingredients listed? |
| Καθαρό βάρος | Net weight | Is it g or kg? |
| Διατροφική δήλωση | Nutritional value indication | Are values per 100 g, 100 ml or per portion? |
| Χώρα προέλευσης | Country of origin | What country is under this heading? |
| Διατηρείται | Saved/Save | Which retention condition follows? |
| Μετά το άνοιγμα | After opening | What additional instruction is there then? |

Two date tags saying something different
Ανάλωση έως This is about food safety. Do not eat a product with this indication after the stated date, even if it still smells normal. In addition, follow the storage conditions on the product.
Ανάλωση κατά προτίμηση πριν από means "least sustainable' to "least sustainable'. This term is about quality. The two formulations are not interchangeable ways to say the same. Also read what applies after opening: a date for a closed packaging does not automatically tell how long the opened product will last.
A reading habit to practice: first search έως or κατά προτίμηση, then look at the date and then check the storage line. Translate an unclear instruction or ask for explanations instead of relying on a single recognized word.

Small words, big differences
A noun often delivers the subject, but small words determine what happens to it. Με and χωρίς make a practical pair: with and without. Και connects two parts and means 'and'. Read such a connection word consciously; it is not an decoration between the 'important' ingredients.
Word outputs also carry information. Φούρνος is oven; in πατάτες φούρνου the other form indicates the relationship with the furnace. Εποχή means season or period; εποχής you can read on a map as 'of the season'. You don't have to learn all the name traps at once to recognize these fixed combinations.
A dish name is not a full list of ingredients. Also, the recognition of 'without' does not prove that a dish is suitable for an allergy. Ask directly for clear information and use a reliable translation if necessary. This lesson teaches texts and does not evaluate individual dishes.

Read quantity, unit and price together
Recognizing numbers is not enough. An amount can apply per portion, per kilo or per piece. Therefore, always search the unit next to it. For a product, you can confuse the total content with the basis on which the nutritional value is calculated. For example, a bottle of 500 ml can have a table per 100 ml.
In the following practiceable all amounts are made up. The goal is the link between word, unit and number. The calculation steps are examples; let a real order confirm the quantity being weighed and settled.
| Figure rule | Meaning | What do you charge? |
|---|---|---|
| ΜΕΡΙΔΑ · € 8,50 | Price per portion | Two portions cost € 17,00 in this example. |
| ΤΟ ΚΙΛΟ · € 20,00 | Price per kilogram | Half a kilo at that unit price costs €10.00. |
| ΤΕΜΑΧΙΟ · € 2,00 | Price per piece | Three pieces cost € 6,00 in this example. |
| 500 ml · ανά 100 ml | Content versus basis of calculation | The bottle contains five units of 100 ml. |
Note also the decimal point: 1.5 kg is one and a half kilo. The abbreviation γρ. is used for grams and κιλό means kilo. Note amounts with the unit; a loose number is easily misrememberable later.

Days and short announcements
At opening hours you can find a lot of information with a small list of words. Pay particular attention to exceptions: 'every day' after which 'except Tuesday' is not the same as every day. The texts in this table are general, homemade reading examples.
| Greek | Dutch |
|---|---|
| Δευτέρα | Monday |
| Τρίτη | Tuesday |
| Τετάρτη | Wednesday |
| Πέμπτη | Thursday |
| Παρασκευή | Friday |
| Σάββατο | Saturday |
| Κυριακή | Sunday |
| Κάθε μέρα | Every day |
| Εκτός Τρίτης | Except Tuesday. |
| Κλειστά την Κυριακή | Closed on Sundays |
| Από … έως … | From... to... |
Practice out loud with two differences: Τρίτη is Tuesday, Τετάρτη Wednesday. The beginning is similar, the rest of the word doesn't. In the case of abbreviations, the order of the week helps, but check the legend if it is present. A temporary message can change the normal opening times.

Twelve reading tests with explanations
First try to answer yourself and then open the explanation. You don't have to send anything and no score is saved. Use an error answer as an indication: was it the letter, the small word, the unit or the context that deceived you?
1. You see ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΟWhat city is this?
Heraklion. Η sounds like him here and Ρ is the r, even though the letter looks like a P.
2. What is the difference between ΕΙΣΟΔΟΣ and ΕΞΟΔΟΣ?
Entrance and exit. The corresponding exit of the words makes accurate reading extra important.
3. A practice board says Δευτέρα–ΠαρασκευήIs Sunday one of them?
No. This is Monday through Friday; Sunday is Κυριακή.
4. Which direction is in ΗΡΑΚΛΕΙΟ → ΣΗΤΕΙΑ?
From Heraklion to Sitia. The reverse ride is not described.
5. Meaning με In court?
With. It connects the dish with an addition or ingredient.
6. Meaning χωρίς κρεμμύδι?
That doesn't in itself tell us about any other ingredients.
7. What is a section about? Συστατικά?
Ingredients. That's a different heading than the nutrition statement.
8. Is Ανάλωση έως Same as a quality date?
No. It means to use up to and including food safety. Follow the date and storage conditions.
9. A fictitious price is € 20.00 το κιλόHow much is 250 g?
€5.00 at this unit price. 250 g is a quarter kilogram.
10. Meaning Πατάτες φούρνου?
Potatoes from the oven. Φούρνου indicates the relationship with the furnace.
11. An exercise board says Κάθε μέρα εκτός ΤρίτηςWhen does the exception apply?
On Tuesday. Always read the small exception.
12. Is Καθαρό βάρος the same section as Διατροφική δήλωση?
No. The first is net weight, the second is nutrition.

A reading routine for the next day
Choose one short text that you will actually encounter. Note where it is and what you think it is the kind of message. Then write three words about it, with accents like those on it. First try to find the core and then check with a reliable source or someone who reads Greek.
Keep not only the translation, but also how you got to the answer. 'I recognized the destination and then saw the direction' is a reusable reading strategy. The next day you can do the same with another text. You build up a small collection that fits your own journey.
Go back to the alphabet for letter recognition, to the grammar for word forms and to Greek on the way to start a conversation with your new words. Reading and speaking support each other: a read word can be pointed out, asked and then re-recognized.
